NEWS FLASH: We're adopting a little girl from Kazakhstan.

Holy Cow!

We know you're thinking what are those crazy kids getting themselves into?!

At first we wondered if we might be too young and naïve. But then we said "What the heck! Let's go for it anyway!"

We've spent the past year preparing mountains of paper work, developing a steady relationship with a notary public, attending night classes on issues for adopted children, and sharing our life stories with the strangers who stand between us and a gem of a baby girl in Kazakhstan.

If all goes as planned, we'll be spending two lovely months in the capital city of Astana--as of the end(ish) of July. We're allowed to visit our little astonishment for two hours each day. Other than that (most of the time) we're free. The trip takes so long because the Kazakhstan government requires a bonding period before they'll even schedule the court date and formal proceedings for adoption.

We're looking forward to playing with brightly colored toys that might be interesting to taste, to learning about Kazak culture, and to watching the rapid development of one of the fastest growing cities today (note to self: fact check). We're already pros at baby talk. (Note to others: Do you guys speak like adults to one another?)

We'll have our computer with us, and DSL Internet access in our apartment. Jane will be putting in her regular work schedule (two deadlines to be met), while Steve puts together a blog for our international adoption pediatrician back home. We're just a click away, family and friends.

We'll let you know if our departure date changes. In the meanwhile, we're kissing the life we know good-bye with a long July 4 weekend visit to our wedding site. We're ready to discover the countless things parenting will teach us about our little girl, our-meshugge-selves, and the miracle of life.

Wow.

Jane and Steve
